Novawing24 feels the need for speed as he gets his feet wet thanks to the first payware release from DC Designs with their F/A-18 Super Hornet Family release.

The F/A-18E Rhino is a development of the original F/A-18 Hornet, being a larger airframe offering more power, longer range and more capabilities than its long serving predecessor. It also has spawned two major derivatives, the F/A-18F and the EA-18G Growler. The F/A-18F is a two seat strike fighter, with a Weapons Systems Officer in the back and optimized for interdiction and attack missions, though still capable as a fighter, while the EA-18G Growler is an Electronic Warfare variant to provide support to strike packages and act in the SEAD/DEAD roles in the battlespace.

While designed as a carrier borne aircraft, it is equally at home operating from land, and the RAAF make use of both the F/A-18F and EA-18G. Until the introduction of the F-35C Lighting II into the fleet, all of the US Navy's combat capability was supplied by F/A-18 derivatives from 2006 to 2019.

As carrier ops are a focus of this aircraft, it has been released claiming full compatibility with Sim Works Studios high definition carrier overhaul system Carrier Extension System. We test this by conducting some carrier ops with the aide of SWS Nimitz Vol 1 and their high definition rendition of USS Dwight D Eisenhower.

This is the first release from DC Designs, and is targeted squarely at the middle ground of accessibility as opposed to full 100% "realism and accuracy", an approach and position I fully support. Does this release strike that balance? Does it fulfil that itch for fast jet ops? Find out now as we put this release through its paces!

This is an in-depth review of all aspects of this release. If you would like to skip to the TL;DR version, jump to 42:30

Thank you to Just Flight and DC Designs for suppling the review copy of this aircraft.

For those who purchase this add-on and needing help with making it work with vLSO, add this section to your aircraft.cfg after the final [flightsim.x] entry:

[General]
Category=airplane
ATC_model=F18F
performance=
editable=0

When opening vLSO, add a custom aircraft with the ATC model entry is F18F. For vLSO, my settings are:
ATC Model: F18F
Type: Rhino
Name: DCD Super Hornet
Approach Light Assembly [Check]
Angle of Attack: Green - 9.47 / Red - 6.35
Abeam Position: Too Wide - 1.4 / Too Close - 1.0

Good Luck Commander!
