Padge Plays! Retro Edition: Fantasy World Dizzy / Dizzy 3 (C64 - 1989 - Oliver Twins/Codemasters)
Welcome to Padge Plays! Retro Edition
This time around we're going back to my gaming routes by having a jump around with a popular egg-shaped hero from the late eighties in the game Fantasy World Dizzy developed by The Oliver Twins and published by Codemasters!
I've had a bad cold recently, to the point where I didn't have a good enough voice to be able to record anything so in my spare time I've been going through a lot of retro games when I came back across this gem. It also turns out that in my latest edition of Retro Gamer they had a feature all about the Commodore 64 turning 40 and as it would appear I haven't done a single episode of PP Retro this year now seemed like a good time to bring this to the channel, and with the C64 having such an iconic birthday in 2022 they'll be more to follow before the end of the year!
So join me as we travel down memory lane and no doubt get impaled on something in the Dizzy 3, Fantasy World Dizzy!
- ABOUT THE GAME -
DIZZY & DAISY strolled through the encahnted forest without a cal in the world... BUT SUDDENLY the Evil King's trolls seized poor Daisy! SHe was sent to Wizard Weird's Tallest Tower, while Dizzy was dragged away and thrown in to the deepest, darkest, dankest, of the Kings' Dungeons in the bowels of Fantasy World. DIZZY was frightened! Who know what fate awaited him... and he still hadn't done this weeks homework! But then he remembered that he had a fresh green apple that he had planned to give to his teacher to escape detention, and he cheered up. And there was some bread and water on the table! A cunning plan began to brew in his mind...
But Dizzy can'd do everything on his own... you must help him!
Join Mega-Star Dizzy and the Yolkfolk in the latest adventure in Fantasy World! Incredible Dragons' Lairs, Wizard's Cloud Castle, th Evil King's Palace & Dungeons, Mysterious new Worlds, Volcanoes, and more.
“Fantasy World Dizzy” (“Dizzy 3“) is the third adventure game in the series. Created by Philip and Andrew Oliver (The Oliver Twins) and published by Codemasters for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC 464, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST and PC DOS in October 1989. The game was also released as part of both the 8-bit and 16-bit “Dizzy Collection” compilations.
Fantasy World introduced a new and more simple inventory system, which was a huge improvement compared to the one used in Treasure Island.
This new system gave players the option of choosing which item to drop, aswell as the infamous “Exit and Don’t Drop” option which was re-used in the later adventure games.
You start the game with 3 lives, which was already welcoming to Dizzy fans since Treasure Island only had one life. However, you can only pickup 2 items at a time at this early stage of the game. Once you get passed the ‘wide-eyed dragon’, there will be a carrier bag waiting on the other side that allows Dizzy to carry up to 4 items. Another new feature is being able to talk to other characters. Including the Yolkfolk; Daisy (Dizzy’s girlfriend), Dylan, Grand Dizzy, Denzil and Dozy.

In this series I will be playing some well known and less well known games all the way from yesteryear through to the present, sometimes from consoles and sometimes from the thousands of PC games available either through websites such as Steam, Good Old Games (GOG), as abandonware, (Home of the Underdogs) or through emulation software. (Such as WinVice C64)
