Pair of Stars About to Collide and Explode Near Earth
WDJ181058.67+311940.94 is a binary star system located about 150 light-years from Earth. It consists of two white dwarfs, which are the dense, hot cores of stars that have already used up all their nuclear fuel. This system is particularly fascinating because it is destined to explode as a Type Ia supernova in about 23 billion years.
Type Ia supernovae play a key role in measuring cosmic distances and understanding the expansion of the universe. In the case of this system, the two stars are in a very close orbit, with the heavier white dwarf gradually accreting material from its companion. When their combined mass exceeds a critical threshold known as the Chandrasekhar limit, a supernova explosion will occur.
