Cortez is the pirate spirit who rules over Keelhaul Key, and the main boss of Chapter 5. At first, his HP will seem low; this is a misdirection, as once you deplete it, he will transform and heal fully, continuing the fight. He has 60 HP total across the three phases, and in each one uses different types of attacks.

In the first phase, Cortez uses basic moves that strike with his weapons. In the second, hitting him several times will cause him to open his chest and reveal a jewel that is his weak spot. Both of these phases are vulnerable to ground-based attacks via the Bone Pile at the bottom of his body, while the second phase can charge up a powerful move.

In the final phase, Cortez loses his body and becomes simply his head, accompanied by his four weapons, the Cortez Hook, Cortez Rapier, Cortez Sabre, and Cortez Sword. Each weapon can attack individually and must be disabled, preferably through party-wide attacks like Vivian's Fiery Jinx, for a few turns to stop them. However, Cortez's head is the only enemy that is required to be defeated to win the fight.
