Welcome to Deconstruction Gaming’s Guide to Gaming Terms. In this video we will explore the term Pathfinding. So what does Pathfinding mean? Pathfinding is calculating a route from the start to the destination.
Pathfinding in video games is done with an algorithm that calculates the path between point A and point B. Pathfinding is used whenever something in a game has to navigate the gaming environment. There are many strategies used in pathfinding such as nav meshes, waypoints, steering, hierarchies, Dijkstras Algorithm, and the A* Algorithm. In the game industry, the A* algorithm is very popular. When calculating the path, many factors may come into play such as the shortest path, the quickest path, the cheapest path, or any other factors that are important to the game. To be successful, all of this must be calculated in real time as part of the game experience.
