Patriotic Swords vs Evil Robot Dinos! Tom Scioli's "American Barbarian!"
28I don't think I can summarize this book any more succinctly than that title.
Do YOU have a patriotic sword? Or facial hair that grows in red, white, and blue patches? If so then perhaps you too are an American Barbarian.
Tom seems to channel all the craziness of Kirby's later comics into a fun homage. Monsters, power armor, funky mechanical contraptions- it all feels very familiar if you grew up reading the Fantastic Four or the Fourth World.
Improbable stuff happens, villains are pummeled and defeated, scenery is chewed in angsty monologues... it's about what one would expect from a Kamandi- esque journey.
Plus you can't go wrong with an artillery footed baddie named TWO TANK OMEN. You just can't.
If you're made of tougher stuff than today's high falutin' comic snobs do yourself a favor and check this out.
