Vintage digital music technology is quite interesting. While its techniques are still used today, it's still unusually pleasant to hear the coarse sound produced by the original designs.

I've actually been intrigues in making music on the PC-98 for a while. It's only recently that I was able to get into it (with thanks to several people around the PC-98 community—see below for credits).

It's surprisingly easy yet deceptively complex. If you ever want to get into making music for the PMD, I highly recommend reaching out to someone familiar with it to have someone to lean on for help and clarification.

Overall, I'm satisfied with my first track. There are many more concepts I'd like to explore, and I'd like to embrace making instruments that fit the hardware limitations rather than trying to brute-force an exact sound.

This arrangement is directly based on a song from the sixth Touhou game. The Touhou Project is the copyright of Team Shanghai Alice. I did not create the original song, only this arrangement.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED
=====================
If you're particularly interested in learning how to produce music for the PC-98, there's a significant community with knowledge about the PMD, a music driver for the PC-98. It has it's own MML which can let you "program" music.

You can find beginner's information at http://battleofthebits.org/lyceum/View/Professional+Music+Driver+%28PMD%29/. When you need help beyond what you can read, feel free to contact whoever you are comfortable contacting. They're sure to help get you on the right track!

EXTRA INFO
==========
The arrangement is designed to be played with PMDB2 or PMD86. It probably would work with PMDPPZ. This arrangement theoretically can work as a replacement in the Touhou games (except TH01—it doesn't use PMD).

The thumbnail conforms to the abilities of the PC-98's graphics for the type used by the Touhou games (to my understanding).
- 16 customizable 12-bit colors for "sprites"
- 8 constant 3-bit colors for "text" (2 colors for a single "character")

The program shown in the video is hoot. It's a versatile player for vintage music. It is difficult to set up and has some inaccuracies, but has a very nice display for the playback.

I used Notepad to write the MML. Mercy me.
