I remember reading about the PC Engine back in the day and seeing it on TV on Bad Influence/Gamesmaster? I loved the look of it, plus it had shitloads of shoot em ups, which is my fav genre.But I had my Amiga so I was happy :)
NEC released a CD Rom ugrade for it which allowed extra content and CD music.
Here are a few shmups that are worth a go you may not have heard of apart from R-Type which I had to add just for the BGM.
Games are running on the Bizhawk emulator.

* The second game is called 'Ginga Fukei Densetsu: Sapphire'
** I didn't create the intro. It's in the PD. Kudos to the guy who did though :)
