One particularly dramatic part of my big holiday 2019/2020 PC upgrade has been the storage subsystem... AMD's new chipsets support PCI Express 4.0 which operate at an unhinged 16 Ghz clock rate, which enable incredible levels of storage IO performance. However what are the real world impacts of this performance? Can you feel the difference? And is there a price to pay for that speed? Because when you start doing the math on those clock rates you'll find that the basic physics of the speed of light is starting to impact signal propagation, possibly causing devices just fractions of an inch further from the CPU to be slower than their neighbors.
