AFRICA (GOLD QUEST)

Introduction: I remembered discovering the famed golden Zulu warrior mask the last time I was in Africa. Back then, I had traded my entire collection of jewels in order to obtain it. However, it was later mysteriously stolen during a train ride from Cape Town. Apparently, the mask had resurfaced again in Africa, but Nomusa, the granddaughter of Shaka, the most influential leader of the Zulu Empire, told us that she recalled her grandfather speaking about it. He had asked her to find the mask and ensure that only a person of integrity inherited it. Nomusa went on to say the mask was created as a way to offer visual instructions on how to counteract the spores. Now, it was even more urgent to find it.

CONDITIONS

Five Common Jewels (Amber, Amethysts, Chicky Masks, Onyx Zebras, and Seashells) plus Gold Lions

LEVELS

Location: Kimberley, South Africa
Squares: 77
Journal Entry: Hani recounted when he came across a waterfall in Rhodesia, behind which was the African Jewel Board, inside a gold cave. He suggested that we recreate a similar scenario to attract Sebastian to Kimberley, South Africa. When we did so, I spotted my nemesis’ backside. When I asked him if he was responsible for the spore infections, Sebastian didn’t move. When I turned him around, I found myself face to face with a scarecrow dressed in his clothes. How did Sebastian outsmart us?

Location: Spitzkoppe, South West Africa
Squares: 110
Journal Entry: Emma, fascinated with the Himba culture of Spitzkoppe, South West Africa, helped OvaHimba women carry water and milk their cows. When Natalie grew weak from too much sun exposure, they lovingly covered her with a protective mixture of butter fat and ochre, which gave her skin a reddish tinge. One of the women, Kovambo, said that a man with an unusual voice recently visited the area and claimed to have found a new green garnet jewel. Could this stranger have been Sebastian in disguise, or someone else?

Location: Mberengwa, Southern Rhodesia
Squares: 76
Journal Entry: We arrived by bush plane in Mberengwa, Southern Rhodesia, to meet Kwanele, a Zulu tribesman who claimed a certain Zulu warrior mask held a clue to the cure for Natalie. Legend has it that a former Zulu king had been exposed to the spores, which left him blind and bearing ruby-colored eyes. It was not clear how the king was cured, but the mask made in his honor revealed two eyes: one made of ruby, whereas the other was surrounded by a star-like shape, which might have symbolized the cure.

Location: Kariba, Northern Rhodesia
Squares: 103
Journal Entry: When Natalie returned from playing with the village children in Karbia, Northern Rhodesia, she exclaimed that a gravelly-voiced man recited a traditional African folk story about how the crocodile got its skin. Intrigued, we asked her to tell the story to us. The crocodile, which originally had smooth skin that the other animals envied, began to bask in the sun to show it off. Eventually, his skin turned rougher and bumpier from too much sun, causing the embarrassed crocodile to forever hide in the murky waters.

Location: Vatomandry, French Madagascar
Squares: 89
Journal Entry: In Vatomandry, French Madagascar, we were told by Mbola, a Betsimisaraka healer, that, to help Natalie, we had to make her a tea made from the whisker of a fossa – a deadly mammal found only in Malagasy forests. As we hiked, we heard a fossa rustling in a baobab tree. When it leaped down toward us, Hani caught it and held it down while I plucked one of its whiskers. We crushed the whisker in hot water, but when Natalie drunk the tea, nothing happened. It seemed silly then, but we were willing to try anything!

Location: Mt. Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro, Tanganyika
Squares: 93
Journal Entry: Since losing her eyesight, Natalie had become more acutely aware of the textures of her favorite objects, such as seashells. When we visited Lake Chala, near Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanganyika, Natalie squealed as a rush of cold water caressed her bare feet. Then, Emma noticed a tiny shell that settled beside Natalie’s feet in the wet sand. When Natalie rubbed the shell’s smooth surface and felt the uneven ridges along the center, she told us that she thought its flaws made it that much more special.

Location: Voi, British Kenya
Squares: 97
Journal Entry: The valor shown by the two elephants that saved us from the attacking leopard back in Voi, British Kenya, astounded us. Because of their orange-red hide, which was permanently colored by the earth, Natalie named the elephants “Fire” and “Golden Nugget”. When a pair of ivory poachers approached, threatening to kill the elephants, we stood in their guns’ way, attempting to save them. As one poacher held up his rifle, his colleague screamed that a venomous black mamba slithered toward their feet, causing them to flee in fear.
