Pedro Pascal and his unusual way of dealing with anxiety
Pedro Pascal spoke candidly about his social anxiety and how, during public speaking, he seeks relief through close physical contact or, hiding behind a mask of his abundant sense of humor, often by hugging his friend. The internet has split into two camps: "it's cute and human" vs. "it's cringeworthy."
As a psychologist and CBT therapist, I explain why touch can actually reduce anxiety (nervous system function, oxytocin, a sense of security), but at the same time, it's a short-term strategy, not a long-term solution—we call it a safety strategy—the same as seeking reassurance from others. It helps us momentarily, but in the long term, it perpetuates our anxiety problem and our belief in our own helplessness.
Because social anxiety can be treated—through regular exposure without resorting to safety strategies (such as seeking reassurance), changing distorted thoughts, and strengthening a healthy self-image.
What do you think? Is this way of coping a form of sensitive support or rather avoidance of the problem?
