Penn State co-defensive coordinator previews matchup with Ole Miss

As Penn State prepares for the 2023 Peach Bowl on Saturday, coaches and players have sat down with the media to talk about the game. Co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter was the latest to do so on Thursday morning. Check out his thoughts about his role with the team this week and the Ole Miss offense here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel.
Poindexter in a familiar position for Penn State
While Penn State's safeties coach isn't typically calling the defense, he is at home in his role as co-defensive coordinator. He's got experience at both Penn State and previously in his career calling the defense.
"I've been in this role. Actually, it happened to me the first year I was here. Obviously, back at UConn from '14 to '17, I was a coordinator. As the coordinator, you don't do it all yourself anyway. We have a great staff. Obviously the guys in that room have been awesome. [Co-defensive coordiantor Robb Smith] Coach Smith has been awesome," Poindexter said.
Poindexter is holding the interim tag for newly hired defensive coordinator Tom Allen, who accepted the job last week, right before National Signing Day. Like on offense, there has been no indication about who will be calling the defense between Smith and Poindexter.
What Poindexter sees in Ole Miss
When asked to asssess the Ole Miss offense that Penn State will face on Saturday, Poindexter had high praise.
"The first challenge is the tempo. You see it sometimes, but we haven't really seen it on a consistent basis like throughout the game like they do," he said.
"I think the depth at receiver, the production at the receiver spot that they have and the players that they have. They have three guys on the field that's all over 700 yards. I don't know if we have played a team with that kind of production, maybe Ohio State."
Poindexter went on to praise the job that Lane Kiffen has done crafting and calling his offense.
"And they've got a really good running back corps. Obviously we've seen good running backs. But I think Coach Kiffin does a great job. He has his guys ready to play with the tempo and with their scheme. They can give you some challenges."
