This talk was supposed to be about how a TAS can be art but is actually about failure, persistence, and the hard work of pushing past setbacks. This is a compelling, passionate talk full of hope despite all the failures along the way. This talk was given to a packed room at MAGFest 2020 which was held January 2-5.

Donkey Kong Country 2 has been a goal of ours for a considerable amount of time. DKC2, like most SNES games, is affected by nondeterministic behavior. Overcoming that is a challenge that has led us to develop a variety of tools and approaches to work out what went wrong. ViGreyTech joins dwangoAC on the panel that covers a large swath of what it takes to perform console verification.

This is a raw recording of the TASBot panel talk at MAGFest 2020. The overall audio as recorded during the talk was not properly balanced at the beginning but improves substantially a few minutes in. This version of the panel talk went through substantial work by britmob to salvage the audio as best we could in post.

This was the planned talk description prior to numerous setbacks:
The ability to look at the code of a classic video game and suss out how it works through reverse engineering can result in beautiful art. In this talk, dwangoAC (Allan Cecil) will delve into the emulators that have been built to dissect console games of the Nintendo era, how to reverse engineer what a game is doing to manipulate it into giving you what you want, and how to play back the results on the original hardware with TASBot to beautiful effect. This talk will primarily be a live demo showcasing emulator reverse engineering tools and the beautiful results of bending the original unmodified code to do the unexpected.
