Our jazz arrangement of “Ideal and the Real” (Persona 5 Royal) by Toshiki Konishi is the fourth in our ‘LAN Sessions’ series, the whole of which is now available for purchase and streaming in album form (https://album.link/thmlansessions)!
This track is also our entry in the #SoundoleChillOut2021 Cover Competition.
P5R brought some great new music to the Persona franchise, and this track—not even one by the series’s visionary composer!—is my favorite of the bunch. Upon being introduced to Dr. Maruki I remember being immediately swept up in the groove. In fact, liked this track so much that I found myself wanting to sit and bask in it during his counseling sessions.
One thing that I did for this arrangement (which features our friend, guest guitarist Colin Greggs) was add some darker, crunchier colors to the harmony surrounding the bass line that’s featured at the end of the original. I hope that you enjoy that reharm and that you get the feeling that it injects just a bit more depth into the auditory representation of a complex character—that it satisfyingly represents how Maruki’s intent, no matter how well-intended, is still twisted.
The last thing I’ll add is that, for the record, I’m no Yoshizawa stan, haha, but I loved all of the content added to Royal. If you’re a fan of Persona 5 and haven’t wanted to sink another 140 hours into it yet, the bonus content is totally worth it (as is simply experiencing this world again). This video gets me pumped every time I get to the part where she rips off her mask. LFG!

The Hard Modes is a combo based in Charlottesville, VA, that approaches its collision of jazz and VGM with nonstop, controller-bashing fury.
The Modes focus on the art of the Limit Break. They arrange around the improvisational moment, using modern jazz harmonic and rhythmic twists to push themselves to the max and turn VGM classics - and a healthy smattering of deep cuts - on their heads in a way where “Uematsu meets Mingus.”
Their goal is to unearth the natural pairing of jazz and VGM, bringing fans of each genre together in ways they may not suspect. They believe that by utilizing their own individual interpretations of the jazz language through improv they are able to forge closer bonds with the game music that we all love, creating a unique personal experience for their listeners.
