Peter's Pile of Shame #6 - Penumbra: Overture
Classic indie horror title Penumbra is your choice this week for the Pile Of Shame. Will Peter find out what is going on in these unusually active mines? Will fear take hold and leave him a quivering mess?
In this, the first chapter in Frictional Games' Penumbra series - Penumbra: Overture, you play as Philip, a scientist who finds himself trapped in a mysterious mine beneath the frozens wastes of Greenland. Using the game's physics engine you must solve puzzles and unlock new paths that lead deeper into the dark. Avoid the rabid dogs & giant spiders and find clues as to who has ventured into the mine before you.
When it was originally released Overture was criticized for clunky combat mechanics and poorly implemented story but was praised for the atmosphere it created and the creepiness of the design. This is one of the elements Frictional worked on and honed throughout the Penumbra series. (And perfected in their spiritual successor - Amnesia: The Dark Descent.)
It's the curse of every PC gamer - The Pile of Shame.
A stack of games that grows ever larger with every Steam sale and Humble Bundle. You convince yourself you'll *eventually* get around to playing them... but never do. Well Peter is saying enough is enough and is going to conquer his Pile of Shame little by little, every Wednesday at 7pm.
