9During the 8-bit era, Nintendo maintained a stranglehold over the video game console market.
The company enforced strict rules on its third-party developers, who were required to sign a contract that would obligate them to develop exclusively for the Nintendo entertainment system.
Therefore , very few games were designed for the Master System outside of Sega’s own development teams.
But regardless, the console enjoyed some success in south America and Europe , and its game library contains several masterpieces, the most impressive among them is Phantasy Star .
Released in late 1987, Phantasy Star was a technical marvel at the time, and a landmark game that helped to define the JRPG genre .
