In this part, Detective Gumshoe testifies about an incriminating piece of evidence: the jacket Maya was wearing at the time of the murder. It is covered in blood, which indicates Maya is the murderer.

Phoenix notices something that Detective Gumshoe overlooked: the fact that there is a bullet hole in the sleeve of the jacket. Apparently, Maya was shot at from a distance. Detective Gumshoe is asked to come up with a new theory as to what happened, one which accounts for this new evidence.
