Phosphor Dot Fossils: The DVD
5Once upon a time, younger me, a stay-at-home dad with a baby boy to take care of, had the crazy idea of creating my own video game history documentary with what I had on hand (an outdated second-hand Avid Media Composer, lots of old video games, emulators, and some graphic design and video editing skills honed over many years in broadcast TV). I authored and burned the discs at home, labeled them at home with one of those Lightscribe drives (remember those?), printed my own packaging, and sold 'em online. Suddenly, at least for a few years, I was a stay-at-home dad with an income.
This is the first of two volumes of Phosphor Dot Fossils, whose intro you'll probably recognize because, after a bit of gentle upscaling, I still use the bloody thing on my current YouTube videos. The original PDF DVD was designed to be a "video book" - there was no announcer, you had to read it. But at the same time you could, in most cases, see and hear what was being discussed.
The first volume was a bit choppy when it came to video quality; I didn't fully understand all of the workarounds needed to overcome that limitation of the (already outdated) hardware; the second volume, which will drop bright and early on Christmas morning, looked much, much better. Bear in mind also that this was the state of video game history knowledge prior to the 20-teens - other information has been uncovered since then.
Since the original Phosphor Dot Fossils DVDs have long outlived their commercial viability, I'm putting them here on YouTube in their entirety. Hopefully you enjoy them as a bit of a relic of homemade video production from well over a decade ago.
