Playing PowerSlave via PowerSlave EX! (part 1)
0This is a game that I think most people overlooked when it came out in the 90s, but it has its own characteristics that set it apart from the competition. Rather than playing through a level and then never seeing it again, this has a bit of a Metroid-esque approach where you can return to levels you previously played and access other areas using items you acquire elsewhere. There's also a pretty heavy emphasis on platforming, which is sort of uncharacteristic of the genre; most of those areas revolve around the threat of instant-death, so it can be frustrating if you spent ten minutes playing through a level and then mess up one jump that kills you.
For the most part the combat isn't too difficult, though there are a number of very small enemies that require you to be pretty accurate. You only have one ammo type to worry about collecting, which simplifies things a little bit and allows you to decide which weapon(s) you want to use rather than finding you're short on rockets/shotgun shells/whatever. Kind of a cool system that simplifies the constant search for ammo that most FPS games require.
