Playtonic Games Has Revived 90s Rare: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair Review
The sophomore effort from Playtonic Games and Team17 shows great promise for the studio's future, capturing a lot of the charm and polish that many Rareware games in the 90s had. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair follows in the format of Donkey Kong Country and Tropical Freeze, but also adds a 3D overworld with Banjo-Kazooie type characterization for a nice balance of exploration and puzzle-solving between platforming stages that keeps you addicted and wanting to see more. The soundtrack is the icing on the cake that really propels the entire experience, having a lot of the deep and ambient moods the Donkey Kong Country series is praised for. I couldn't recommend this game more, especially to fans of the 90s Rare games.
