"Sworn Virgin" by Elvira Dones tells the story of Hana, a young Albanian woman who chooses to live as a man and take on the role of a sworn virgin in order to escape the constraints of her traditional patriarchal society. After living for years in the mountains as a shepherd and taking on the identity of Mark, Hana emigrates to the United States and struggles to reconcile her past with her present as a successful academic. As she navigates the complexities of her gender identity and the cultural expectations of both Albania and America, Hana must confront the sacrifices she has made in order to be true to herself.
