I pity her and marvel at her naivety (“‘I’m not going anywhere’: Deves”. April 19). She finds herself the latest weapon in the Morrison culture arsenal. Deves is being shamelessly used to promote Morrison’s brand of intolerant. self righteous conservatism. He has no illusions as to her slim chances in Warringah. That was never her purpose. There are more votes in whistling to conservative. sport loving parents and the communities aghast at the growing liberalism around gender and diversity. He certainly doesn’t want to appear blatantly cruel and nasty. or to be targeting and excluding minorities. Not at all. and why does he need to. when she and her entourage have so readily obliged? She could have heeded the wisdom in Gladys Berejiklian’s refusal to play on Morrison’s “team”. Fleur Jouault. Mosman Too right Katherine Deves is going nowhere – certainly not into parliament. Scott Morrison’s captain’s pick of Deves in Warringah not only highlights the risks of overriding the local party branch’s democratic right to elect their own candidate. but also again shows his willingness to chose divisiveness and discrimination as political weapons. His integrity and honesty has been questioned by colleagues within his own party. and his refusal to accept responsibility. never be wrong. and his use of discord and vilification to win regardless of the cost to others. show that his beliefs have more in common with the US Republican Party than with his professed Christian faith. Anyone would think that he believes that the seat is unwinnable. It also makes you wonder whether Deves’ opinion is a “core philosophy” of the Liberals. as alluded to by Teena McQueen. Jo Rainbow. It seems he would prefer to lose the seat rather than admit he made a bad choice. Has he been reminded of his choice of Craig Kelly? Sandra Burke. North Sydney Morrison isn’t getting the credit he deserves for his tactical masterstroke in sacrificing Deves in Warringah. knowing her transgender views might win conservative votes elsewhere. It’s what any good Christian would do. John Macdonald. Kings Langley Deves makes transphobic comments about “the destruction of families for flawed beliefs”. I wonder if she’s ever spent time with families of transgender children. teens or adults. If she did. chances are she’d probably find much love and support in these family circles where people feel safe and protected when they come out. Kerrie Wehbe.
