Pokemon Devs' Next Gem: Little Town Hero (Nintendo Switch) A Surprising Turn Based RPG
Pokemon developer Game Freak made a different kind of turn-based RPG, and it seems surprisingly meaty. Combat no longer consists of simple consumable attacks, linked to a rock-paper-scissors elemental system. In Little Town Hero, combat is mostly based on counterattacking. Your actions are chosen randomly from a "deck" of available choices. You mostly swat away enemy attacks, until the foes are vulnerable. If you choose wisely, you'll be able to stun the enemy long enough to do direct damage. Your duels also take place on tiled battlefields where dice rolls are used to move to different tiles, in between turns. Some of those tiles have buffs and debuffs that can turn the tide of battle.
Fair warning: Fights can last half an hour, as you learn the combat system. The first boss fight in this game proves that point.
