For this arena boss, you have access to Gabite's Dragon assist and Absol's Dark assist. Dragon assist I've always found awkward to use because it's hard to hit moving targets with it, though Heatran does have a tendency to sit in one spot often, so it could reasonably keep it inflicted with Tired for a while. I normally shit on the Dark assist, but it actually has a valid purpose here that you couldn't really access during the story battle: it can actually get rid of the magma pools this thing spawns, and it doesn't seem to ever try to respawn them. This cleans up the playing field particularly well for this battle. I actually didn't need Shieldon all that much this time, but I of course finished things off with it.
