Exeggutor is a Pokémon that's had its ups and downs in the 25+ years of Pokémon. When it was new, it was pretty popular, both competitively (as Psychic-types were then) and in popular culture, featuring frquently in the anime and being instantly recognizable to every child. Like many of its Generation I brethren, it fell in popularity in both cases, and even a new form of Exeggutor to showcase regional forms in Pokémon Sun and Moon failed to do much, though it does have its fans, me being one of them.

A comparison of Alolan Exeggutor versus Kantonian Exeggutor also shows the design evolution in Pokémon: Pokémon design early on was more about generic monsters and creatures based vaguely on human oncepts of real-life animals, plants, and other things, as is with Kantonian Exeggutor, but as the years had gone on, Pokémon design gradually became more specific and more researched, as is with Alolan Exeggutor. Kantonian Exeggutor is vaguely based on coconut palms, but no attempt was made to make it look any more accurate than it being recognizable as such with no explanation for its Psychic-type. Alolan Exeggutor, meanwhile, has an appearance much closer to real coconut palms, combined with the leaves of the Dracaena tree, which is where its Dragon-type comes from.

That's a large part of why I'm so frond, I mean fond, of Alolan Exeggutor. The Exeggutor Team's playlist is as such:

This team I considered as a failure early on due to it having a low win ratio compared with my previous teams, but that didn't mean I'd scrap the team or split up the Pokémon into other teams. I knew that this lineup of Pokémon is diverse and broad enough to hold its own, and what really needed to change were its moves, maybe its hold items, Effort Points, and Abilities. This was before I started putting up videos online of this team, as it was still in its testing phase. Pyukumuku was, in fact, the last Pokémon I had decided on for this team, despite her being in the second slot, and this was the best decision I made for this team, as Pyukumuku provides a solid defensive foundation for the rest of this team, most of whom have not-so-great defenses, to work off of.

The Exeggutor Team was also made shortly before the release of The Crown Tundra and the subsequent opening of the floodgates of Legendary Pokémon gained from Dynamax Adventures. In turn, Game Freak started allowing one Restricted Pokémon per team into Ranked, which meant Zacian everywhere you'd look. To be frank, this team was not designed to fight Zacian at the time, and it isn't that well equipped to fight Zacian now. Zacian's power is so great that even Pyukumuku takes about 70% of her total HP from a Behemoth Blade, not giving her a lot of time to set up. I have to rely on Escavalier's Metal Burst to take down Zacian, which isn't always possible. (Or hope Exeggutor shows up before Zacian and sets up a Trick Room first.) I have made changes to account for other commonly seen Restricted Pokémon, like Kyogre, Yveltal, Groudon, Eternatus, and Dusk Mane Necrozma, however, so it's not like this team is helpless in the face of Restricted Pokémon.

It's not so much Zacian's incredible offensive power as it is Zacian's Speed, however, as the core reason behind this.

All of this is a lesson for long-term team planning, namely to prepare even the earliest teams for Restricted Pokémon to be seen later. Admittedly, this is easier to do with double battle teams than single.

Type: Single Battle
Opponent: ごっしい (Goushii) (35)
Stadium: Battle Court
Music: Tower of Darkness
My Pokémon: Alton (Exeggutor) (Alolan), Mara (Pyukumuku), Arne (Escavalier)
Opponent's Pokémon: ウーラオス (Urshifu) (Rapid Strike), ムゲンダイナ (Eternatus), エースバーン (Cinderace)
