Why does my Pokemon Yellow cartridge not save? This is probably due to a dead CR1616 internal battery. For Pokemon Yellow, Nintendo stored players' save data on an internal CR1616 battery soldered to the game's motherboard. When this battery died, players could no longer save the game, and all save game on that battery became unrecoverable.

To fix this, I soldered a new CR1616 battery to the game's motherboard. This allowed me to not only save games, but not to worry about not saving games for at least 5 years (the life of the battery).
