This is Pop Star on the Moon, an original theme I composed for percussion ensemble. This is part of my album "Superstars on the Horizon," which includes 10 original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers.

Welcome to Ruby's theme, the second song from my original album! She's a peppy rabbit and she'd love to be a superstar one day (you could even say a superstar on new horizons, which may or may not be what inspired the album title "Superstars on the Horizon"), so a pop star theme is perfect for her. Given all the space-themed furniture in her house, you could even call her a moon rabbit, which is why she'd specifically be a pop star on the moon. This theme is also inspired a bit by the Pop Star class from Miitopia, which matches the peppy villager personality pretty well.

So you're probably thinking "okay but why FOUR xylophone parts?" and that's a totally fair question. I went all out with doubling the melody in octaves, plus harmonizations, and I think it helps give that pop star almost-anime-like vibe to it. I typically use vibraphone for the melody in bigger pieces like this, but using xylophone as the melody allowed for the arpeggios in the vibraphone part to shine during the rests in the melody. Also fun was the drum set part, which really just plays eighth notes at 180bpm for almost the whole time. In late 2021 I tried recording this and couldn't keep up with it in my right hand, but thanks to Butter Building, Gourmet Race, and a few other covers since then, I didn't have any problems recording at all this time around. Glad to see my percussion chops are growing alongside my arranging/composing chops!

As I mentioned in the Q&A video, Ruby is my favorite Animal Crossing villager and this was the first theme I wrote for the album. According to my files history, the first iteration of this theme started all the way back in April 2021! Almost two years later, it makes me so happy to hear this theme brought to life (especially on real instruments after hearing so many different versions of it in Finale) and finally be able to share it with you.
