In this chapter, Jacques Hellouin brings McPherson up to speed on his own investigation of the Eaton couple, including an account of his visit to the mysterious Brotherhood of the Rosy Cross and how he finally managed to track the Eatons back to their hotel, only to see them both dispatched by a monstruous entity. Unfortunately, it turns out that McPherson has inadvertently set the police on Hellouin's trail as well, and now he not only has to uncover the truth about the Eatons' murder, but also save poor Jacques from the guillotine. To do that, McPherson starts collecting information on both the original head of the Brotherhood, Gregoire de Allepin, and the new leader of the organization - Dr. Frank Kaufner, the psychoanalyst.
