Power Stone (Dreamcast) - (Level 8 | Galuda | 1cc | Longplay)
Hello again folks, today we have a fighting game I hold near and dear to me (just next to darkstalkers) Power Stone!
I first discovered this when I first bought my dreamcast years ago, power stone 2 was my first exposure to this small series (which I will tackl in the future!)
The games plot is pretty simple, set in the 19th century, people are now somehow strong believers of myths, legends and superstition. One legends stands out the most since it has the ability to grant anyone's wishes. That legend is the power stone.
On to the game, it's a 1-on-1 3d arena fighter, the controls are simple since it's only jump, grab and attack. The main gimmick here is the environment, there's a variety of weapons for your disposal, the environments can also be used to your advantage such as being able to climb walls and poles. The interactions also vary depending which character your using (light or heavy to be specific.)
The 2nd gimmick is of course the power stones themselves, throughout each stage, power stones will be available, collect all 3 and your character will then transform, a meter is then shown once all 3 stones have been collected. There's a light and heavy attack, the L and R are triggers activate your power fusion which deals some heavy damage! However your power fusion can still be messed up if your opponent manages to score a hit on your or grapple you in the air.
The games cast of characters are pretty unique and colorful, I like Galuda the best, his design is cool and his moves are pretty rad. 2nd character I found that's also amusing is Mr. Dragon Ball himself, Wang-Tang. Seriously, he has a super saiyan form and even a spirit bomb that's orange.
There's a total of 8 stages you have to beat, the order of the characters depend on who you pick but stage 7 and 8 will always be Kraken and Valgas. The game is fast as well, it constantly has players using weapons and fighting for the power stones that appear. Kraken isn't so bad really but Valgas is a tough cookie (his human form that is.) The 2nd form of valgas is pretty easy to beat (though I kinda choked a little in this run but I did clutch it nonetheless. You just have to be near his right arm and the homing crystals appearing out of his back won't hit you as much.
The endings range from slightly wholesome to funny. If you beat the game as falcon, his father, pride comes in to rescue him only for him to drop the stone. There's also a bad ending, mainly if you choose Kraken, Valgas and Jack (the ripper.)
Overall, it's a fast paced 3d fighter with a unique gimmick. I honestly wish capcom would make a power stone 3 or at least port 1 and 2 on modern consoles. The game is very approachable and not as complex, if you're looking for a fun 3d fighter, then I highly recommend power stone!
If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
