Ah Ninja Gaiden, I've tried the first game and it was brutal but I may revisit it in the future.

Anyways Ninja Gaiden Shadow, I stumbled upon it a few years back when a friend show me their cartridge. I looked it up, played it and said to myself that this game plays similarly to Shadow of the Ninja. After looking it up, my guess was indeed right.

Supposedly the game was supposed to be a game boy version of Shadow of the Ninja before Tecmo got the rights to it. It's just Shadow of the Ninja with the Ninja Gaiden name on it. The only Ninja gaiden related stuff here is it uses two of the tracks (Stage 2 and the final stage) and the fire wheel which is the only special attack. The rest of the assets are taken directly from Shadow of the Ninja.

The gameplay is simple enough as well, A jumps, B attacks, holding up while pressing A triggers Ryu's grappling hook. The game is sadly short but it still offers some fun nonetheless. The difficulty is easy too since it's generous with items.

It's also graphically impressive for a game boy title, it's in par with Hammerin' Harry and Trip World. The music is pretty rad as well, especially the game boy rendtions of The Amazing Ryu and Inverted Catwalk from Ninja Gaiden I & III.

It may have the Ninja Gaiden name on it but it's still Shadow of the Ninja to me.

P.S.
I've also discovered the shaders for retroarch so I used the GB pocket filter. The ghosting effect is now visible and the animation looks cleaner too!
