Princess Peach Got a One Button Action Game
So they turned an action game into a stage play this year. Then back into an action game.
Yup, I sure did compare this easy Princess Peach game allegedly made only for kiddies to the "deep" video game likenesses of Devil May Cry. And that other game that keeps popping up here. The fact is, I played so many games in this genre and a ton of memories about them came flooding to me while playing Showtime. So a game that's like a Broadway production immortalizing that culture was gonna win me over.
Covering this game, though, isn't about me throwing shade at action games for being "deep" - this is me advocating for action games that feel *complete*. I notice most modern action games go for combat depth, or tryna be "just like DMC," without much of an identity or cohesion to call their own. And honestly, Showtime is one of the more complete and cohesive action games that I've experienced in a while. Even if it is a heavily scripted B Button game.
I also recommend playing this game from start to finish in one sitting. Preferably with a loved one and minimal room lighting for maximum coziness and good feels. Marathoning the action and soaking all the highlights in, pretty much spectating the game like it's a whimsical theatre play in motion, really shows how tight the campaign can be. Does make me wish there was some quickplay/arcade mode for the levels here.
Here's hoping this video willed some hopes for a sequel sometime soon. I also hope we don't gotta wait several Ninty console gens to get it. Stay Stylish.
