(PS1 30fps) X-Men: Children of the Atom - menus & Arcade mode 2/14/17
3(Note: I accidentally recorded this at only 30fps. It got doubled to 60fps in the conversion process, but really only animates at 30. Ack!)
The very beginning of Capcom's "vs." series, although here the "vs" is not in the title, just in big letters under the hero and villain icons on the character select screen. Yes, it is "X-Men: Children of the Atom" on PS1!
There isn't a whole lot to explore here in single-player, especially since "Versus Mode" is two-player only, not vs CPU. But the game at least has a pretty thorough set of options, although there is no save support, so you'll have to redo your settings each time you boot up the game.
The gameplay is strictly 1 v 1, with a single-charge super meter that takes a fairly long time to charge. You do get a taste of the high jumps, air combos, and big super moves that would become mainstays of the "vs." series, though! Also, each character has a special ability activated with a three-button input of some sort; I rather flail through this whole thing because everything I knew about the moves I learned from the single tips on the "Game Over" screen--which I ran into a lot; I play here as Colossus, Silver Samurai, Psylocke, and Omega Red, but don't get past even the second battle with any of them. ;_; On this default CPU difficulty level, the AI does have a bit of deviousness about it, with some clutch use of fireball spam or supers. Also I'm just not very good at fighting games, much as I enjoy them. ^_^
The large character sprites feel somewhat clunky, and don't have a great deal of animation in this PS1 version at least. The cool multi-stage backgrounds are a real highlight though!
The video starts out with the FMV intro--a Saturn user tells me that this differs from the Saturn version, which was able to power a live, sprite-generated version of the intro.
