(PS4) Bit Dungeon Plus - first play!
19My first time playing Bit Dungeon Plus, which has just arrived on PS4 (and Switch).
The previous game in the series, 2014's Bit Dungeon II, has very high reviews on Steam. With Plus though they handed the game off to a different developer, to judge from the credits, and apparently its 2016 Steam launch was pretty rough--and it doesn't sound like the Steam version has improved much since. In 2017 it came out on Xbox One, and it sounds like that version was pretty rough as well; a rough 3DS version came out somewhere along the way, too.
Here in 2018 though, things seem to be going better--well, not for the game on its old platforms, but better on the new platforms, PS4 and Switch. There's a little tutorial that goes over the main buttons, and I can't say I ran into any bugs in my first attempts at storming the randomly generated dungeons.
It's tough 'cause there's no knockback when you hit someone, so they stay right in your face and probably hit back (with a jarringly generic projectile-style effect, even for what it probably supposed to be hand-to-hand attacks), and I guess you've got to be really good at holding the Block (Shield) button right away, or doing a hit and run type of thing.
The tutorial shows you a magic attack, but so far I don't seem to have one in actual gameplay, which seems slightly odd. I guess you don't come across magic you can use until a little farther along, maybe?
Anyway, for me it still has that "one more play" compulsion so far, which is a good sign. There's supposed to be couch co-op play, which is probably the real reason I got this, so hopefully I'll be able to make that happen in the next few weeks.
