(PS4) Bit Dungeon Plus - a snippet of co-op play
5A slice of couch co-op play of the PS4 version of Bit Dungeon Plus, somewhere around stage 1 or 2 I guess, Easy difficulty; cut off earlier than I'd intended since some real life stuff came up for my friend just then, but hopefully this gives some idea of what the co-op is like.
It's clunkier than single player. There are some odd design choices! Like, only one of the two players can exit a room...and I'm not sure how it decides which of the two players it is! Weird and constantly confusing and ugh.
On the plus side, I do like how dying is handled: if one player croaks, they lay there until the other player reaches them and instantly revives them. Nice and straightforward! So the game only ends if you both die at once--like if a big nasty boss shoots two huge bullets simultaneously. ;_;
Back to the confusing side, the loot system, already a little opaque as to how item stats seem to go up or down sometimes, gets really confusing in two players, because it seems like each chest has a completely different for each player, even though it looks visually like it just has one item. And only one player can check a chest at a time, so you have to take turns looking. Again, confusing and slow and weird. Also, you can sometimes bump into a chest and swap the item in it with your current item, even without pressing a button--hm I guess maybe if you have an attack charged up (which you usually want to do because it gives you a big speed boost, not to mention a damage boost when you run into an enemy).
And then the stat powerups you get at various points in a level, I think only one of you can get at a time? It isn't entirely clear--but definitely only one of you gets to choose. You do only face the same amount of enemies a single player would face, so it does feel a lot easier than single-player--like, way too easy for long stretches, until suddenly you take three hits from archers in a room and you're on the verge of death somehow.
So the co-op experience--a little uneven!
