There have been rumours about PSVR 2 or a new PSVR for PS5 for a while now, patents leaking out of Playstation and whsipers about what they'll be doing with the Playstation 5 have fueled the fire for months, but today thanks to a Sony blog post the PS5 VR headset has been confirmed...but we won't be seeing it this year. The Playstation 5 VR headset is currently being developed and is targeting a release date thats just out of reach, 2021 is out of the question but this announcement early in the year (with huge gaming events like E3 & Gamescom ahead of us) leads me to believe the PS5 VR release date / PSVR 2 release date will land firmly within 2022.

Personally I'm hugely excited, the PSVR was my first taste of seeing VR go mainstream, the headset sold the idea of VR to families & was one of the first instances where I saw a wide range of people (not just seasoned gamers but newcomers too) buying into the idea of VR. The PS5 looks set to dominate this console cycle & knowing that Sony are all in on the idea of a new VR headset / a new Playstation VR headset fills me with confidence about VR's future & it's gradual emergence into the gaming mainstream. The Quest 2 paved the way late last year for affordable, widespread VR gaming & now PS5 looks set to utilise the huge fanbase (and hopefully by that point install base) of the console to put VR in the hands of even more people worldwide.

With a confirmation of better FOV, higher resolution, less cables (a single cable solution) and Dualsense integration into a brand new VR controller it sounds like PS5 VR / PSVR 2 / the new PSVR for PS5 headset is heading in the right direction to become something very special indeed.
