35A whole operation preceded Yeltsin's resignation and Putin's first speech. For a year, the advisors of the Kremlin, including spin doctor Gleb Pavlovski, searched for a successor. Like a real casting director, they went in search of a suitable actor.
Putin seemed cut out for the role. During the first years of his presidency, Putin bravely followed the instructions of the spin doctor to establish his image. But he learned quickly and increasingly began to formulate his policy. Putin chose his path, and Gleb was fired overnight.
The VPRO is once again touring Europe and European history. The new series picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia.
