The situation is similar to DOOMenstein - another unfairly forgotten great mod which only reached release of a demo.

It begins with very impressive and memorable introduction level similar to Unreal in its feel. We wake up in the stasis pod, look around and receive well voice-acted holographic message. It gives the sense of the story and makes you immersed, also creating a feeling of tension which will be present throughout the whole campaign thanks to the health meter which beeps in sync with the character's heartbeat, beeping faster during battles.

Time to enter the teleporter and get through two levels included in the demo. Level design looks good. Layouts, verticality, variety and interest for exploration are done well. Doing hard jumps and being observant is rewarded with useful powerups. Locations consist of realistic places where each room has a purpose.

The weapons and battle system are reworked. They are original, challenging and different from Quake2, requiring some time to get used to them. Enemies are dangerous and like to hide in the darkness. Shotguns turned into hybrid of shotgun and chaingun, which looks cool. Machine gun received alternative fire mode accessible by pressing the key which selects this weapon again, it fires with explosives.

Some items are consuming energy you find and collect on the levels, these items can be deactivated at any time. Quad damage instagibs enemies that come close to you. New item, Radar, allows you to know where the enemies are and shoot from behind a corner without taking risks.

In the end, you will be invited to play through original Quake2 with the new weapons.

According to http://legendsworld.net/shooter/game/1859, Infinity: The Kai'Ren Threat was going to be a commercial total conversion for Quake2 with 10 new single player levels, 4 new DM levels, 10 brand new weapons, 10 all new power-ups and items, over 15 brand new monsters, ability to play in either first or third person perspective, plus all new sound effects, and a rich, new 10 title soundtrack. But it was cancelled for some reason.

Overall, it's a very promising demo, and I would buy the full version of this mod if it existed. It is very sad that not only it was cancelled, the released demo itself is becoming forgotten. Search for Infinity: The Kai'Ren Threat gives very few mentions of it.
