Based on the video game series of the same name.
The original Quake was a fairly plotless but excellently crafted first person shooter made to improve on Doom, but the second game I think has a fine cinematic plot.
-
The second game opens with an audio montage (included in the trailer) of first contact with an alien race called The Strogg leading eventually to an attack on Earth and mass devastation. After a final push defeats the alien menace, the united space military forces track the Strogg to their homeplanet of Strogos to end their threat once and for all. The player starts off as one of these marines, air dropped into the fight, but knocked off course. This deviation turns out to be a stroke of luck since he out of his entire battalion survives the bombardment. Alone behind enemy lines, the lone marine must deactivate the massive anti-space craft weapon array (or 'Big Gun' as it's known) and confront the Strogg leader called Makron, ending the war.
Well, until Quake 4 came along.
The plot is simple, but there are interesting aspects I think that keep it compelling. For one thing, the Strogg are an unusual enemy being literally amalgamations of cyborg machinery and captured organics, so their ranks are always growing as they capture more and more soldiers. Equally interesting I think is the 'down home' nature of the marines. Having just come from Earth's first intergalactic war, they are not particularly well trained in anything except resiliency and resourcefulness. They are regular people fighting for their world and their species, one of them the unsuspecting hero who might just save the universe.
