Quake | Part 10: Over-Thinking Things Again
In my defense, most of the games I played during "Spooky Theme Month" this past October relied on finding clues to solve puzzles rather than difficult platforming or shooting monsters until they died. Then again, a giant button standing in the middle of a pool of lava is a bit more obvious than most secrets tend to be in this game. Usually you're finding that one texture that's out of place, or noticing a button you can shoot that's tucked into a dark corner of the ceiling.

Quake was developed for DOS PCs by iD Software in 1996, and would go on to become arguably the most influential first person shooter game to ever grace the genre. Although the gameplay is very similar to that of The Ultimate Doom, Quake trades the Martian and Hellscape settings of its predecessor for alternate dimensions, gothic architecture, and enemies that would feel at home in the stories of H.P. Lovecraft.
Earth has once again been experimenting with teleportation technology, called "slipgates." With them, mankind can instantly transport people and cargo across vast distances. The possibilities were nearly endless.. and one of those possibilities happened to involve an enemy force, code-named "Quake," tapping into the slipgate network to send an army to conquer the planet. But before a preemptive first strike could be launched from Earth, Quake made its move. Now it's up to the one surviving ranger to fight his way back into the base, into the monster's home dimension, and put a stop to their invasion once and for all.
