Author Quan Huynh discusses redemptions, second chances, the criminal justice system in America, and creating change. He speaks on his work with Defy Ventures and his recent book "Sparrow in the Razor Wire: Finding Freedom from Within While Serving a Life Sentence".

Defy Ventures is a non-profit helping those with a criminal past transform their lives through the journey of entrepreneurship. Even though someone has served their time, a second sentence begins as soon as they’re released. It creates a revolving door to prison and a legacy of poverty, dependency, violence, and incarceration that is passed down through generations. Defy Ventures’ entrepreneurial programs enable one of America’s largest forgotten communities to defy the odds.

"Sparrow in the Razor Wire" is Quan Huynh’s story of transformation inside a place many see as the end of the road. In his book, he shares the journey of redemption and discovery that led to his ultimate freedom. He found that, no matter the prison, the key to unlocking the door is in each one of us.

Quan works as the senior post release program manager for Defy Ventures. After spending twenty-two years in and out of correctional institutions, Quan was paroled from a life sentence in 2015 and created his first company six months later. The following year, he received the Peace Fellowship Award for his work with the Alternatives to Violence Project. Quan has been featured in Entrepreneur, PBS Newshour, and numerous other publications and podcasts.
