READ DESCRIPTION:

Qurare: Magic Library is one of those F2P experiences that got little to no attention from the gaming journalists. I myself did little to give my thoughts and opinions on the game at launch, or even thereafter. Despite this lack of coverage I find myself still playing the game, and still enjoying it to a certain casual degree. It's not perfect by any means, but it is interesting enough to draw the player into the grind that it is. Especially when it comes the the more artistic aspects of the game.

At base level Qurare tries to fit into the TCG category while negating most of what that genre has to offer. Sure there are RPG elements, and a card focus that utilizes attack, defense, and healing properties while going even deeper with card specific attributes that help you combat baddies in a QTE style, but it is not traditional in the MTG sense. I did say "QTE (Quick Time Event), by the way as battle in this game is more or less such an engagement. You have to choose wisely which cards to activate after their cooldown period is over, and keep your base character alive as you do so. Your loss, or win is of course based on how well you keep up your HP meter.

Gameplay within Qurare comes in a couple of different forms. In the Story mode playthroughs you'll be listening to characters banter on about the search for Kodices (tomes of knowledge), perversions of various sorts, and a fabled library of Babel that was split apart, and spread across realms. The Kodices of which they speak add to your ever expanding troop of active, and passive character cards each of which can be assigned, upgraded, and used to combat the libraries foes as you advance the plot.

After some kind of pointless, and overly friendly conversations you'll run a lane style race with walled obstacles, Kodices, and various other power-ups that can be obtained by running or jumping into them. Collecting the blue gems will increase the fever gauge, and once said gauge is full you'll go into a sort of Sonic style fever time where you can collect even more gold & Kodices. When you reach the end you'll enter a QTE battle in which timing of your plays, and the choices thereof are of the essence.

Per chapter there are several end lane matches that eventually escalate into a more challenging boss fight. Beating the boss character will advance the plot to the next chapter. Apparently there will be seasonal play with these chapters, and more plot & Kodice content released as time goes on.

To a point Qurare is a microtransaction centered experience, but enjoying it can be done without paying real world currency for the blue gems that basically allow for lotto style chances at rarer Kodices. Regardless of your ability to outright buy individual rarer cards with the gems you can still earn them through standard play, and earned in-game gold & gems. Simply logging in each day earns you a daily award ranging from Kodice fragments to potions, and even gems.

For what it's worth I simply love playing this game to enjoy the Korean anime art that is plastered on each and every card. It is unique. Before I forget to mention this game was developed by a Korean developer, Smilegate. Not that it makes a difference. It just shows they've got talent like other worldly developers. If you fancy it be sure to download this freebie on your PS4, and give it a try. You might like it!
