R-Type 2's so hard - R-Type Final 2 [DLC Stages x5-7] (2021-07-11)
This third set of Homage DLC stages rounds out the initial set, and with three stages to complete a full 7-stage course (with x7 including its own ending scene and being treated as a Final stage when using the course editor).
My initial impression of Stage x5 was pretty poor. Like, it's nice to see the general level aesthetic kept & I found the music super nostalgic, but starting out with an immediate jump into the desert variant of the stage made it look surprisingly mediocre. The boss also is an awful replacement for Negus O Shim, even if that was one of the more loathed bosses in the original game.
I later hit the temperate/tropical version of the latter portion of the stage and it's a far better & more interesting look for it. Going further into the frozen version where the underwater music plays and not only is the nostalgia hitting so hard, but it's one of my favorite underwater tracks of all time.
Stage x6 (aka the 4th stage of R-Type 2) is surprisingly brutal - far outshining the difficulty from even the R-Type Leo homage stage. I remembered people were saying that R-Type 2 was hard, but I definitely wasn't ready for it. I had to unabashedly credit feed that one, and even then I spent a serious amount of time on that boss which makes any Gradius speed course look surprisingly tame. The boss is kind of devious in that my two favorite boss killers (Anchor Force variants & the Split Wave Cannon) both are effectively unusable due to the moving walls & weak point closing when damaged.
Having not seen or played much or R-Type 1 (only a bit of Dimensions and the Game Boy version), I can't speak too much of the change in difficulty, but I can certainly tell that the aesthetic and mechanics are a good bit different, with the stage being overgrown and full of tentacle and mushroom creatures. I can definitely understand that Granzella was kind of stuck with another basic Dobkeratops, and I think they did a good job of making it interesting, but I'm certainly left wanting more cool bosses (also maybe replace the x5 boss). That being said, I think it's definitely a clean, nice-looking level, and I later found out that the ending happens to be an homage to the end of the original game.
