Radar Mission is an adaptation of the board game Battleship, spuced up with a few fancy features that would only be possible in a video game, and it's one of the several early Game Boy games that were created under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi, the lead man behind the Game Boy itself.

Remember Steel Diver for the 3DS? At its core, that game was essentially an upgraded remake of Radar Mission.

There are two separate game modes to choose from:

"Game A" is the traditional Battleship-style game. There are three difficulty levels (each represented by a different admiral), and three gameplay options can be toggled from the main menu. "Aircraft" allows you to launch a fighter jet into battle if your carrier is still afloat after fifteen turns, "Near Miss" will enable an alarm that'll sound if one of your shots lands next to an enemy asset, and "Lucky Shot" will scatter hidden power shots around the board.

Each game plays out over the course of three rounds. In the first two, you battle the enemy's fleet at sea, and in the third, your fleet approaches attacks the coast in order to attack the enemy's headquarters.

"Game B" is an action game that puts you in direct control of a submarine. At the beginning of each round you can outfit your sub with speed, torpedo, and radar upgrades, and once the action kicks off, you submerge to track enemy positions and surface to fire. The game is won by destroying the enemy's sub or wiping out their entire fleet, and whichever of the five endings you see is determined by your final score.

Radar Mission has a lot going for it. It's easy to pick up and play, the graphics are sharp, the music is catchy, the animated cutscenes provide a nice bit of flashy style (I love the EXPLODING screen), and the CPU doesn't cheat. It's quite a fun game, overall.
