Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulation was the second Star Trek game produced for the Super Nintendo, following Spectrum Holobyte's 1994 action-adventure title Star Trek: The Next Generation: Future's Past (https://youtu.be/-lrCKis-bFM).

This time around, you play as a cadet who has just entered his/her first year at Starfleet Academy, and over the course of four years, the game follows your progress through a series of simulated scenarios designed to prepare you for the duties of a career bridge officer.

Before missions, you chat with your cadet buddies, study various subjects relevant to duties in your quarters, and attend briefings.

Upon entering the simulator, all of the action is viewed from the bridge of your star cruiser where you'll chart courses and initiate contact with ships and space stations. The missions begin with simple tasks, such as routine patrols and moving navigational buoys, but before long, you'll be warping to remote regions to engage enemy ships in battle.

Once a mission is finished and you've returned to the starbase, you'll receive a grade for your performance, and if your average score for a year meets the minimum pass threshold of 75%, you can move on to the next year's tasks. If you successfully complete your senior year, your final exam will take the form of the famous Kobayashi Maru scenario.

Star Trek: SASBS is a cool idea for a game, and though it's quite limited in scope, it arguably captures the feeling of the show's on-bridge action better than any other Star Trek console game up to this point. The real-time 3D graphics, though simple and slow, provide a sense of scale, and the way your objectives change mid-mission does a nice job of keeping things from growing stale despite the limited number of actions you can perform at any given time. Mechanically, it feels a lot like Wing Commander (https://youtu.be/DFmol8E50Ro), but its unique Star Trek-flavor will be appreciated by fans of the series TV series. The movie-based scenarios available outside the main game were also a really nice touch.

I had a lot of fun with SASBS. I think that much of its appeal will be lost on anyone who isn't familiar with the show, but if you were one of the millions that regularly tuned into to follow the exploits of the Starship Enterprise, there's a lot to enjoy here.
