Bomberman GB (Game Boy Color) Playthrough
159A playthrough of Hudson Soft's puzzle game Bomberman GB as it appears in Daewon CI's 2003 compilation cart for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Bomberman Selection (봄버맨 셀렉션).
Bomberman GB was originally released for the Game Boy in Japan in 1994, and a few months later it was released in North America as Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! (https://youtu.be/PXsEHVJ9-tA). Bomberman GB/Wario Blast's sequel, originally known as Bomberman GB 2 in Japan, was confusingly renamed Bomberman GB for its 1995 release in NA and Europe.
In 1996, Hudson released Bomberman Collection, a Japan-exclusive Game Boy game that brought together Bomber Boy (Atomic Punk in the US), Bomberman GB (Wario Blast), and Bomberman GB 2, all with Super Game Boy enhancements.
Then, in 2003, Daewon CI picked up the rights to Bomberman Collection and released a modified version of it for the Game Boy Color in South Korea under the name Bomberman Selection.
Bomberman Selection features enhanced versions of Bomber Boy and Bomberman GB (JP version) and leaves Bomberman GB 2 on the cutting room floor. The game in this video, Bomberman GB, sports improved colors over its original Super Game Boy-compatible counterpart.
But what I felt made this interesting enough to take a look at is that it was based on the Japanese version of the game - Wario is nowhere to be found - and that the game was in English. The cutscenes are different than the ones found in Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman, and this version of the game has an intro cutscene.
What makes this one particularly entertaining for English speakers is the laughably poor quality of the translation. That's not really a surprise for a Japanese game made for the Korean market (though one has to wonder why it's not in Korean...), but wow. The intro somehow manages to make Bomberman GB's story sound like a race war. It's the sort of thing that has to be seen to be believed.
