The Radeon R9 280x is not a next generation card, and instead is very much a re brand of the previous 7xxx serioues card (also known as the GCN architecture - Graphic core next). The Radeon R9 290x and Radeon R9 280 are the next gen cards (which include an audio DSP).

The Radeon R9 280x CAN be put in Xfire with the Radeon 7970 - and in doing so in Battlefield 4 @ 2560 x 1440 reaches over 100FPS (just under 60FPS for a single card).
