Raging Blasters Arcade Expert Solo CLEAR!
That was quite fun! Mostly. The Expert mode's difficulty, I think, is equivalent to Power Strike II Normal Mode.
Raging Blasters is a... caravan shooter? I think it refers to the shooters that was made with caravan mode in mind, the likes of Soldier Blade and Star Soldier. I barely played them at all, so I can't compare this game to its inspirations. But assuming this game is indeed the latest example of a caravan shooter, I think I'm going to love them.
On the surface Raging Blasters is on the simpler side, really. No weird mechanics. You can have your focus shot, 5-way spread shot, and speed change. That's it. You can pick 1 of the 5 shot types: Wave, Homing, Fire, Laser and Ring. In general all weapons work fine except Wave. Still good, but the fire rate is low. Homing, as the name implies, is homing. It's surprisingly powerful especially when you point blank your target. Fire, the explosion cancels enemy bullets. Great defensive shot type. Laser. pierces enemy armor. Many enemies protect their weak points, so at the right moments laser is ultra useful. Last but not least, Ring. The best and the most versatile. It can delete bullets, but more importantly it has flexible functionality, either for defense and offense. But due to its short-range nature, this is not for beginners.
It has to be noted that you don't need to build your power. When you lose a life you'll only lose the currently equipped shot type, so no need to worry about difficult recoveries!
The highlight of this game is its stage design. Fast, frantic, varied, high speed, it's a delight to playthrough! The enemies are unique and the caravan patterns are fun. Though the final boss is on the disappointing side because the way to beat it is on the obnoxious side. The front is protected and you have to go towards the back of its weakness and that's only on specific moments. When you don't have laser, this fight drags on. Annoying!
The game has this chain system as part of its scoring system. It's a shame that it's impossible to not break the chain at all. But hey, not all games have to use CAVE-standard. Can't help but feel the chain system was a slapdash feature, though.
Oh, yeah, the game is easy. This game is not a bullet hell. Many bullets can be cancelled like shooting normal enemies, and enemies don't shoot much. This game is more about shooting than dodging, so this game is not demanding. It's not a bad thing. In fact, it's a feat to be able to make a fun easy game. I highly recommend this awesome game for beginners of shmup games! Would be nice for the game to have stage select, at least.
The Expert mode, while still fun, I'm not a fan of the methods on making the game more difficult. I think the popcorn enemies receive HP buff? They require more hits to finish off. Some enemies have their movesets buffed, but minimal. Extends will require each 400k points instead Hard mode's 300k. I don't think nerfing the player is a good way to make a more difficult mode. And the most annoying of all, the popcorn enemies will also shoot. They shoot so much yet they don't give you much room to dodge. Stage 2 is the most annoying stage in the game due to this very reason!
