Early afternoon was a bit eventful as a runaway string of cars during routine shunting operation failed to brake as anticipated in a runaround siding at L3. Though 1 handbreak was applied the cars went past the flat section and picked up speed in the 2% section from Connely Creek. I chased the cars that are difficult to get on when stopped let alone at 20MPH. It managed not to derail and the switch at the junction was deverted towards Whittier and the passing siding where a waiting passenger train was off duty. No injuries or damage to equipment was reported, but the condcutor got a good chewing out my management.
