Recoloring Popcorn DOS game (CGA graphics only)
#dos #cga #games #recolor
Popcorn is one of my favorite DOS games from CGA era. CGA was huge and expensive 2D(!) graphic card for PC back in 1981. It had only 16K(!) of memory. But it was first color graphic adapter for PC. 16 different colors simultaneously in text modes! But most common graphic resolution for games was 320x200(!) pixels and only 4 colors. Palettes in graphics modes were extremely ugly: background(black),green,red,brown/yellow or background(black),cyan, magenta, white. (And two brightness levels. And rarely used additional hidden palette and more colorful composite mode). Background color could be changed. Other colors were unchangeable. Few clever games can change palettes and|or background color on the fly. Not much variety. This video shows how could Popcorn game look like if IBM engineers take somewhat different colors in 1981. Any ideas how I did it? What is your favorite CGA game? Please share your opinion.
