Recording a drum kit with a single Rode NT5 with cardioid & omni capsule & Saramonic Smartrig preamp
Before I make any YouTube videos about microphones and certain tech, I do a load of preliminary tests to make sure the idea is sound. Theses prelim tests are not usually shared as they are very rough, but in certain instances, as in this one, I make some of the preliminary tests public as they may be of use to other people.
The idea behind this video was to see if me and my good friend, Grant Walker, could get a passable drum sound by recording a cut down drum kit with a single microphone. In this instance I used a Rode NT5 studio pencil condenser microphone. I've alternated between a few takes, some using the cardioid head/capsule and the others using the omnidirectional capsule.
The reason for trying out both the capsules was to see what the differences were and how those differences were effected by the mic positioning. The microphone was powered and preamplified by the Saramonic Smartrig and recorded directly into the Sony AX100 camcorder, there is no pre or post processing what so ever with this audio, just some re-balancing in the edit.
Anyway, I hope this video and examples of the NT5 are useful for others.
